About Candace Newton
"Solutions to life's
problems are usually within our grasp, we just need
to know where to find them and how to use them" - Candace Newton
Despite an early life marked by turmoil, estrangements,
domestic physical and emotional abuse and divorce;
Candace has devoted her life to the empowerment, education
and well-being of women and their families.
Happy memories from Candace's childhood are
few. One of five children, she and her siblings moved
several times to follow her father's work and,
or as a result of their parents' separations.
Their home was frequently a scene of violence, police
visits and fear. While Candace was often the target
of her father's abuse, at the young age of 11
years old, she had a revelation about her father that
changed the way she thought. Realizing her father was
a broken man, lacking the skills to cope with his failures,
she no longer feared him. While the recovery took many
years, the seeds of her life-long compassion and understanding
had been planted.
After her parent's divorce, Candace became the
classic statistic. Her teen-aged years were defined
by gang involvement, dropping in and out of school,
running away, foster homes, odd jobs and finally, living
on the streets, with all the accompanying horrors.
At 19, Candace became a single mother of her oldest
son and was forced to accept the responsibility and
challenges of parenthood. After finally making peace
with her father while he was dying of cancer, Candace
knew she had to change her life.
Candace married at 23 and was soon ordained and living
in South Africa working as missionaries with her husband's
and his parents. At first reluctant to go, she soon
loved her new home and the people she worked with. "I
saw the suffering and pain that had long been a part
of that country" she said, "I learned what
prejudice really was and felt the anguish of a people
that had been repressed." Her work with women
in South Africa inspired her after she returned to
Canada in 1985. "I grew a natural compassion
for women's issues, watching my mother and other
women face challenges with self-esteem, violence and
emotional pain."
She and her husband divorced after 16 unhappy years,
and she found herself the single mother of four children.
Just prior to her divorce and seeing the need to "get
her life under control" Candace went to night
school and eventually college, earning the highest
marks in her class in the Nursing Unit clerk program.
She then left with her children and over the next few
years, worked in several hospitals and bought a home
with her sister-in-law, who was going through a divorce
herself, to ensure there would always be a parent in
the house for the kids.
Crises in the health care industry and the struggle
of being a single parent forced Candace to, once again,
take another step. She and other single moms and girls
founded the Square Ring Club, to provide non-judgmental
support to women in need, in whatever capacity necessary.
Candace then added 'teacher' and 'author' to
her resume. She is the author of medical educational
curriculum and teaches in Lower Mainland school districts.
She served for two years as the Program Coordinator
at a Surrey College and has recently been attending
remaining courses to complete her Provincial Instructor's
Diploma in Adult Education.
She actively supports childhood cancer research on
behalf of the Michael Cuccione Foundation to help find
cures and treatments for children with cancer. Candace's
own 3 year old granddaughter has cancer and is in her
2 year of treatment. For more information on
childhood cancer or her granddaughter, please see: www.prayforbabyisabel.blogspot.com
With over 20 years experience, Candace continues her
passion of educating and helping women from all walks
of life in any and all issues that need to be addressed.
Her experience and inspiration give hope and answers
to women, closing the gap in education, motivation
and encouragement and doing whatever is necessary to
unlock the secrets.
