FROM STEDMAN...

"It was a pleasure to share my leadership message with the participants at the February 28, 2007 Unlocking Secrets for Women event in Vancouver. I feel the greatest opportunity in life is to have a sense of who you are - and to continually redefine what this means in your life. The freedom that comes with finding out who you are is your foundation, and a gift that allows you to engage in personal and professional pursuits that are fulfilling, meaningful, and rewarding. I appreciate Candace asking me to provide my insights to the women in attendance, and look forward to being part of the future events that are in the process of being scheduled."

Here's How WOW was born

The Women of Worth Conference

So tell me, how often do you reflect on just how fabulous you are? When do you take time to move past the internal voice that whispers you could have done it better, faster, smarter? I don't know about you, but I spent way too much of my earlier life in the dark hole of believing I was never quite "enough." It was like a secret part of my psyche that nobody could know about.

So then my question became, "What can I do about it?" I imagined a thousand extraordinary women joining together for an entire day with dynamic world-class entertainment and speakers on Health, Wealth, Leadership and Soul... a gourmet lunch... humour, fun, pampering, massage, makeovers, retail therapy... and chocolate! This event is now held in Vancouver and MC'd by CBC-TV news anchor Gloria Macarenko. It's an unforgettable and empowering day that will inspire and ignite every cell of your body, mind and soul.

It humbles me every time I get another email from women who have attended WOW and taken their dreams to a whole new level - from starting their own business, to improving relationships with a partner or family member, to creating results with less effort and more ease, to experiencing greater health and energy, to improving communications at home and work, and to finally balancing their hormones!

The White Rock Bladder Health and Incontinence Centre

Devoted to assist patients overcome incontinence through minimally invasive means. More than two million women of all ages in Canada suffer from urinary incontinence or loss of bladder control at some point in their lives.

Headed by Medical Director Dr. Roy Jackson, the Bladder Health Centre uses urodynamics to diagnose stress urinary incontinence, and then provides the appropriate minimally invasive treatment, taking into account the uniqueness of each patient. The aim is to offer comprehensive treatment options, including Behavioral/ Muscle Therapy, Biofeedback, Electrical Stimulation, Medication and the TVT* Tension Free Support for Incontinence Procedure.

Innovated by Gynecare (Johnson & Johnson), the TVT* is a thirty minute outpatient procedure that has demonstrated proven results in effective stress incontinence treatment. TVT* is an excellent treatment option for many women, as it is performed under local anesthetic, with rapid recovery. Patients experience minimal scarring, and little or no pain subsequent to the procedure. They are able to return to their typical routine within a day or two.

TVT* is the only treatment of its kind to have its efficacy demonstrated by long-term clinical results. Of the women treated by Gynecare TVT*, 98% are still dry or experience significantly less leakage seven years after treatment. Very few patients experience complications.

More than 500,000 women globally have been treated with Gynecare TVT*, which is 10 times the number who have undergone the next procedure of its kind.

Put Kids First

Started after the abduction and murder of a little girl in our community.  This organization has fought for the national sex offender registry as well as to educate adults on the dangers of predators against children and give those children tools to stay safe. No-one knows just how many pedophiles are in any given neighborhood because our country started to register pedophiles and sex offenders only a few years ago. Anyone convicted before then will not be registered unless they abuse again.  Even after they are registered, the public will not know if they are placed in their neighborhood because that would violate the offender's rights. Thousands have been pardoned with their records wiped clean and the public will never know. According to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), 145 dangerous offenders were released on parole just in B.C. alone between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2006. These offenders are considered dangerous because they are expected to commit another serious crime in which someone will be seriously hurt or killed. Of these, 66 are sex criminals.  EDUCATE YOURSELF AND YOUR KIDS.

Feng Shmeng: Unconventional Advice for the Organizationally Challenged

Dear Susan & Heather:

I am a chronic, repetitive loser of items that I have dubbed "nomads"- possessions that appear to have minds of their own. I have been plagued by the mayhem caused by these wandering gypsies my entire life. Anyone who suffers from this affliction can attest to the frustration associated with the countless hours pointlessly engaged in pursuit of missing objects that literally disappear into thin air.

Typically, professional organizers stress the importance of finding and maintaining permanent homes for household items for easy, on-demand retrieval. Yet, those items that travel from room to room, or go in and out of the house, remain defiant in their refusal to occupy a fixed location. I am going bankrupt buying replacements for my sunglasses alone. Can you help?

In Desperation,
Born to Lose

Dear Born to Lose:

We recently undertook an informal poll of friends and clients, to determine if there are universal experiences shared by sufferers. Each person volunteered a list of items that go astray most often. There was a remarkable similarity in the responses - regardless of age or gender. The common threads included items that were typically small, portable and frequently used. The following renegades constitute the ten most elusive.

Without a Trace

10. Watches
9. Earrings
8. Gloves or Anything that comes in pairs
7. Claim checks
6. Phone numbers
5. Pens
4. Remote controls
3. Phones
2. Glasses
1. Keys

Here are several suggested solutions we have collected from recovered "lose-aholics."

  • Although it might be a bit cumbersome, try to attach as many of the above to your person. Your neck is a powerful resource. You can hang multiple accessories- phones, glasses, keys and pens, for a layered look - and it leaves you hands-free! Don't ever buy a cordless phone without a locator feature.
  • Clip your gloves to your jackets, like the pre-schoolers do.
  • Give important papers like claim checks, tickets and parking receipts to more responsible friends, family members and colleagues for safekeeping.
  • Remote control? Forgetaboutit. You are a woman!! You are more than capable of watching a 30 minute program without channel surfing.
  • You can simply work out the single earring dilemma by piercing a second or third hole in your earlobe.
  • Watches are becoming redundant anyway, with the cell phone serving as the preferred timepiece (advantage: already attached to your neck).
  • Use the "store" feature for every call you receive. That way you won't have to write numbers on small pieces of paper you are bound to misplace anyway.

So, unless you enjoy the endless runaround of hide and seek, give these a try. At the end of the day you will have your time back. And what is worth more than that?

Gift of Fertility - Dr. Jeffrey Roberts

The Pacific Centre for Reproductive Medicine (PCRM) is the first fertility clinic in Canada to offer a compassionate fertility preservation program for women with cancer.

Although modern medical therapies for cancer have become immensely successful, the price paid for survival is often the loss of reproductive function from ovarian toxicity. PCRM has launched a compassionate program providing the latest in fertility preservation technologies in an effort to offer hope and future fertility for woman undergoing these potentially sterilizing cancer treatments. These services require the use of assisted reproductive technologies, including in vitro fertilization, and the cryopreservation of eggs, embryos or ovarian tissue. PCRM will provide all of the necessary treatment without charge to women accepted to the program.

The Pacific Centre for Reproductive Medicine (PCRM) is unique in its ability to offer these technologies. The clinical staff have been assembled from the some of the finest IVF centres over the continent. The director of the fertility preservation program, Dr. Jeff Roberts, received special training during his fellowship at Cornell Medical Centre in New York, where the first human ovarian transplant was performed, and many of the commonly employed fertility sparing techniques pioneered.

The PCRM IVF laboratory has the instrumentation and technical expertise required to conduct the techniques of egg, embryo, and ovarian tissue cryopreservation. In particular the PCRM laboratory staff has over ten years of experience freezing all developmental stages of human pre-embryos, with a particular interest in egg cryopreservation.

Patient eligibility is determined by a number of factors after consultation with the patient, their physicians, and PCRM staff. Since fertility services in British Columbia are not insured, through this program, all medical and laboratory services will be donated by PCRM. Medications will be paid for through the PCRM Fertility Preservation Foundation allowing nongovernmental organization, industry, and caring individuals to donate with PCRM to this worthy cause.

100% of the money donated to the foundation will be used for the purchase of fertility medications for patients utilizing this service and to support appropriate charitable organizations. PCRM continues to interface with all groups providing cancer care, to ensure that eligible women are informed about the fertility preservation program.

How to Turn Yourself Inside/Out!

Have you ever tried to change someone? When relationships don't cooperate with our expectations, it can be easy to focus on what the other person is doing wrong, how they should be different, and what we need to do to try to change them. See if you recognize yourself in this scenario:

Every time Linda gets together with her friend Paula for coffee, she finds herself patiently listening to Paula vent about her challenging marriage. Linda has given her lots of helpful advice, and although Paula seems grateful, she hasn't acted on any of it. Linda feels hurt and stops taking Paula's phone calls hoping she'll get the message.

What would it be like if Linda paused for a moment to consider how she might be contributing to her own frustration?

I meet a lot of people who believe that happiness or satisfaction comes from outside of us and that when people and situations are the way we want them to be, we will feel happy and fulfilled. I call this living "Outside / In" because we look outside of ourselves for something to make us happy on the inside. And it's not that this belief is wrong, but if we truly want more fulfillment and peace in our lives, relying on something we can't control to give us this (other people and situations) is pretty risky.

I help people explore what it means to live "Inside / Out." Taking responsibility and getting real about what's going on in our inside selves first and allowing that to inform our outside actions.

Turning ourselves "Inside/Out" requires an exploration into who we REALLY are; not who we want the world to think we are; not the masks or roles or identities we developed to ensure we were liked and accepted. Until we really know and accept ourselves on the inside, we will always be looking outside of ourselves for happiness.

If Linda had taken the time to get real with herself, she might have discovered that her expectation for Paula to change was draining a lot of energy and that she was not being the patient, open and accepting person she believed herself to be.

Once Linda accepts this about herself, she is now clear to choose her course of action. She might choose to continue connecting with Paula, seeing it as a learning opportunity to practice open-hearted acceptance without expectations. (This may be exactly the safe container Paula needs to take some steps out of her situation). Linda might also decide to share with Paula what she is feeling, which could deepen their friendship. The point is that by getting real, Linda has empowered herself. And with this comes a tremendous capacity for joy, peace and fulfillment from within.

Citrus coaching solutions uses the tested and proven "Inside/Out" empowerment model for individual coaching and corporate coaching, facilitation and training.
